Custom Outdoor Saunas in Wayzata, MN

Wayzata homeowners who want a custom outdoor sauna usually have one of two lots: a compact in-town yard north of Lake Street, or a larger wooded property in Ferndale, Highcroft or along Bushaway Road. We build for both. Each sauna is made by our crew in St. Bonifacius, on the other side of Lake Minnetonka, then delivered and set in place.

Wayzata sits at the northeast corner of Lake Minnetonka, about half an hour from our St. Bonifacius shop by Highway 7 and County Road 101.

From the Ferndale peninsula to the grid north of Wayzata Boulevard

Wayzata is a little over three square miles, and it holds very different kinds of property. Ferndale is the peninsula between Wayzata Bay and Browns Bay, described in the city's own historical study as rocky and forested. It was subdivided out of large estates, as were Highcroft and Locust Hills near Bushaway Road. Old Holdridge, on the east side, was laid out over uneven ground with larger lots on narrow, curving streets. North of Wayzata Boulevard the land opens into a rolling upland with a regular grid of tree-lined streets.

A sauna plan follows the lot type. On an estate-size property the questions are privacy and distance from the house. On a grid lot north of downtown they are footprint and how the sauna gets from the street to the backyard.

Wayzata Bay, Gleason Lake and Peavey Lake

Most of Wayzata's shoreline is on Wayzata Bay. Gleason Lake is on the northeast side of town, and Peavey Lake sits by Ferndale and Highcroft.

The original village was built between the lakeshore and the bluffs, and grade is still part of the picture near the bay. We check the slope between the street, the house and the water before we talk about where a sauna can sit. Anything close to the lake also falls under shoreland rules, which Wayzata handles through its Community Development Department.

Winter on the north shore of the lake

Wayzata averages around 54 inches of snow a year, with typical winter temperatures between the low single digits and the upper 20s. That is the season a sauna gets used hardest.

Two choices make winter use easier. Keep the walk from the house short enough that it gets shoveled. And if you go electric, ask us about WiFi control: on our Mound build it lets the owners start the IKI heater from inside the house.

Which sauna fits a Wayzata lot

On Wayzata's in-town lots, the Kota (6x8, 4 to 6 bathers) fits where yard space is short. The Tuli (8x12, 6 to 8 bathers) is the common pick wherever there is room for it. Larger properties in Ferndale, Highcroft and Locust Hills can take the Superior (8x16, 8 or more bathers) or a Custom build designed around the house and the view.

More on how we build them: custom outdoor saunas. What they cost: pricing.

Delivery and site prep in Wayzata

Wayzata deliveries run from narrow, curving streets in the older neighborhoods to long wooded drives near the lake, so we look at access during the site visit and plan the set around it. The sauna sits on a level, solid base prepared ahead of delivery. For an electric heater, we coordinate with your electrician so power is at the site when the sauna arrives.

Wayzata's Community Development Department administers the zoning code and reviews projects near the lake, so start there. Wayzata is inside the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District; for a lake lot, ask the city whether the district needs to review anything.

We can also handle the site work: the gravel pad or piers, the electrical trench and hookup, and building on site where a finished sauna will not fit through. The full rundown is on our site work, delivery and installation page.

Questions from Wayzata

Saunas in Wayzata, answered

Have you built a sauna in Wayzata?

Not one we have published yet. Our nearby projects are in Minnetonka and Plymouth, which both border Wayzata, and across the lake in Mound and Minnetrista. The Minnetonka build is a Tuli with an IKI electric heater, set under mature trees in a backyard.

Can I put a sauna near the shore on Wayzata Bay?

It depends on the lot and on Wayzata's shoreland rules. The city's Community Development Department reviews projects near the lake, so ask them what your parcel allows before you settle on a location. We help from there, choosing a model that fits and supplying the dimensions the city wants to see.

Will a sauna fit on an in-town Wayzata lot?

Often it will. The Kota is 6x8 and seats 4 to 6, and it was designed for yards where space is tight. If there is more room, the 8x12 Tuli seats 6 to 8. We measure the yard, look at how the sauna would get in from the street, and tell you plainly which one fits.

I live in Wayzata. Can I try one of your saunas before I order?

Yes. A Northern Steam Tuli with an IKI electric heater is the sauna at Nordic Escape in St. Michael. Nordic Escape is a separate business, and you can book a session there to sit in the same 8x12 layout we would build for you. It is the fastest way to find out whether the Tuli is the right size.
