Custom Outdoor Saunas in Chaska, MN

Chaska homeowners who want a custom outdoor sauna have a builder close by, because our shop is about 25 minutes away in St. Bonifacius. We build each sauna there with our own crew and deliver it to your yard finished. Most of the planning for a Chaska build comes down to two things: what your neighborhood allows and how we reach the spot you picked.

St. Bonifacius is northwest of Chaska, about 14 miles and roughly 25 minutes by Highway 41, Highway 5 and Highway 7.

Building in Jonathan: start with the association

A good part of Chaska sits inside Jonathan, the planned community started here in the 1960s. The Jonathan Association has an Architectural Review Committee and written guidelines for exterior projects, and individual neighborhoods within Jonathan can carry their own covenants on top of that.

We do not interpret those documents for you, and we will not guess. Before you order, ask the association where a detached sauna falls in its guidelines and what it wants to review. We can give you the footprint, height and exterior materials of the model you are considering, so the association is looking at real numbers. Our usual exterior is black board and batten with a clear cedar entry, and it helps to know early if your neighborhood expects something different.

River-town lots downtown, newer yards toward Lake Bavaria

Downtown Chaska sits on the Minnesota River, and the blocks around it are the oldest part of the city. Yards there tend to be smaller and closer to the neighbors, which points toward our 6x8 Kota and an electric heater.

Head north toward Lake Bavaria, Hazeltine Lake and Hazeltine National Golf Club and the neighborhoods are newer. The usual questions there are a fenced yard or a walkout grade, and both are things we sort out in person.

Lake Grace, Lake Bavaria and Chaska's smaller lakes

Chaska has more water than people expect. Lake Bavaria is on the north side, and Lake Grace, Lake Jonathan, McKnight Lake and Big Woods Lake are scattered through the neighborhoods. If your lot touches one of them, or backs onto a creek or wetland, ask the city whether shoreland or wetland rules affect where a building can sit. Do that before you get attached to a spot by the water.

A sauna does not need lake frontage to be worth having. On most Chaska lots the thing to plan is what you see from the bench, and we place the window for that.

Which sauna fits a Chaska lot

Chaska lots cover a wide range, so we do not push one model. The 6x8 Kota suits the smaller yards near downtown, the 8x12 Tuli is the common pick for a subdivision lot, and the 8x16 Superior makes sense where there is room and a bigger group to seat. Anything that has to meet an association's requirements can be designed as a Custom.

Delivery and site prep in Chaska

We build the sauna at our shop and bring it to Chaska finished, so the pad and the route in need to be settled before delivery day. If you choose an electric heater, we coordinate with your electrician on getting power to the pad. We look at access during the site visit and plan the set around it.

For permit and zoning questions, call the Planning Department at Chaska City Hall and ask how a detached sauna is treated on your lot. If you live in Jonathan, check with the Jonathan Association as well.

We can also handle the site work: the gravel pad or piers, the electrical trench and hookup, and building on site where a finished sauna will not fit through. The full rundown is on our site work, delivery and installation page.

Questions from Chaska

Saunas in Chaska, answered

I live in Jonathan. Do I need approval before putting a sauna in my yard?

Ask the Jonathan Association before you order. It has an Architectural Review Committee and published guidelines for exterior projects, and some neighborhoods have their own covenants too. We cannot tell you how your documents read. We can give you the size, height and exterior details of the sauna, so the association has what it needs to answer you.

Have you built a sauna in Chaska yet?

Not yet in Chaska itself. Our closest finished build is next door in Chanhassen, and we have others in Minnetonka, Minnetrista and Mound. Chaska is about 25 minutes from our shop in St. Bonifacius, so a site visit and a delivery here are both short trips for us.

Will a sauna fit on a small lot near downtown Chaska?

Usually, yes. Our smallest standard model, the Kota, is a 6x8 sauna for four to six bathers, and it goes where an 8x12 will not. The city decides how close any building can sit to a lot line, so check with the Planning Department first. Then we measure the yard and confirm the fit.

Should I go wood-fired or electric in a Chaska neighborhood?

With neighbors close by, electric is usually the easier fit. There is no smoke to drift next door, and the heat comes on with a switch. Wood-fired works well where you have space around the sauna and want the fire to be part of the routine. We build both with IKI heaters, and we will tell you which one we would choose for your lot.
