A family in Chanhassen wanted a place to slow down, and this custom outdoor sauna was built around that idea. The steam room is 7x10, so no one is crowded on the benches and there is room to stretch out in the heat.
The exterior is clean and modern: vertical board siding, a natural wood soffit with recessed lighting, and a cedar door with a glass panel. It sits in a residential backyard without looking out of place, which is not easy with a building this size.
Inside, tongue-and-groove cedar covers the walls, ceiling, floor and benches. Cedar handles heat and humidity well, and it gets better with use. The heater is an IKI Pillar, a Finnish-made unit known for its large stone capacity. All that stone gives soft, even heat instead of a harsh, dry blast. It is paired with WiFi controls, so the sauna can be ready before you walk outside.
The oversized window is one of our favorite details on this build. It brings in daylight and gives you a view of the backyard while you sweat. It sounds like a small thing, and it makes a real difference in how the room feels.
A sauna like this gets used year-round. Minnesota winters make the heat feel even better, and it sees plenty of use in summer too.
